With hoteling, there is a Federal regulation that we have to come
in once a week. I tend to do it on Fridays so I get to see a lot 
of my friends and interact with them there and occasionally I’ve
gone out to lunch at one of the restaurants in the area to catch
up with them and get some pointers for law school and things of 
that nature. People here will help you out and explain things. I 
mean, you’re not on an island here people, people are there to 
help and they want to see you succeed.

PTO Campus

Christian:

Here at the PTO there are a lot of amenities. There’s a gym on 
campus, so if you want to stay in shape there is an opportunity to
do that. The dues aren’t that expensive, I believe it’s twenty 
dollars a month. There’s a cafeteria, there’s a free lunch shuttle
that takes you to Old Town Alexandria and drops you off in the 
heart of Old Town, where there’s a variety of restaurants. There’s
dry cleaning located nearby. There are several restaurants right
in the vicinity. Plus we’re really close to the Metro if you want
to take public transportation to work. That is a very convenient
and optimal choice.

Work/Life Balance

The quality of life at the Patent Office is excellent. There are
committees on campus that schedule events; happy hours. There’s a
bus that goes to Atlantic City. There are some ski trips during 
the winter, things of that nature. So here at the PTO we try to 
balance work and play, you know work hard and play harder, that
type of attitude.  

What I Like About My Job

Christian:

I like what I do because it’s challenging, I see the real-world 
applications of it in computer security, so security is a huge
thing. We’re all trying to be more secure on the Internet, things
of that nature and I’m always seeing the latest technologies and
it’s never the same technology twice in a row, so I’m learning 
about something for one encryption then I’m learning about 
something else. I’m the type of person that likes to learn and 
this job just gives you that opportunity to stay on top of the 
latest technology.
